Intrigued by the concept of ISPA, where shoes are thoughtfully designed for easy disassembly and recycling, I embarked on a project that celebrated these principles. Dismantling the shoes into their constituent parts – soles, covers, laces – I found myself with a palette of distinct elements to work with.

Guided by the plastic material's unique characteristics, I undertook the challenge of reimagining these disparate elements into a harmonious new form. The shoes, once a unified whole, now transformed into a collection of tiles that encapsulated various facets of their identity. This process unveiled concealed features of the shoes, unveiled only through deconstruction.

The motivation behind crafting these tiles was deeply tied to the historical context of the exhibition site – once a sauna. My personal affinity for communal baths amplified this connection; the serene embrace of warm water against tiled surfaces never failed to captivate me. In those moments, the repetitive yet subtly imperfect arrangement of tiles offered a soothing visual rhythm, bearing the human touch of their creator.

Leveraging the inherent nature of the materials and the narrative of the shoes, interwoven with the exhibition site's history, I created a trilogy of light objects. Each object encapsulated the sensations of warm, hot, and cold baths, echoing the ambiance of the sauna. Just as it melts the body and relaxes the muscles by moving back and forth between baths of various temperatures, plastic also makes us think that the properties of materials that heat, melt, and cool down are similar to our appearance

쉽게 분해되고 재활용될 수 있도록 디자인된 ISPA의 컨셉에 흥미를 느껴 신발 해체 프로젝트를 시작하였습니다. 신발의 밑창, 커버, 끈 등 각 구성 요소가 분해되어 최초의 부품으로 돌아가 새로운 작업을 위한 재료적 팔레트로서의 재생을 이끌었습니다.

신발을 구성하고 있는 플라스틱 재료 본연의 용해되기 쉬운 물질적 특성을 활용하여 각 구성품을 조화롭고 새로운 형태로 융합 시키는 작업을 그리며, 단순했던 신발 한 켤레가 해체되어 다채로운 재료가 혼합된 타일로 재탄생 시켰습니다. 이 과정에서 우리가 평상 시 무심코 발을 구겨 넣었던 신발이 실은 재미나고 멋진 특징들이 숨겨져 있다는 사실을 담으려 하였습니다.

타일을 고안하게 된 이유는 과거 목욕탕이었던 전시장의 역사적 맥락과 연결되어 있습니다. 공중목욕탕에 몸을 담글 때 볼 수 있었던 반복적이지만 어딘가 미묘하게 다른 패턴의 타일들은 완벽하지 않지만 어딘가 서투른 인간적인 미를 담고 있는듯 합니다.

ISPA의 컨셉, 플라스틱 재료 본연의 물질적 특성, 전시장의 역사적 맥락을 3개의 라이트 오브제에 담아 제작했습니다. 각각의 오브제는 우리가 흔히 아는 대중목욕탕의 온탕, 열탕, 냉탕을 형상화 합니다. 다양한 온도의 탕을 오가며 몸을 녹이고 근육을 이완시키듯이 플라스틱도 열을 가하고 녹인 후 식으면서 굳어가는 재료의 물성이 우리의 모습과 비슷하다는 생각을 해보게 합니다.
