2025.11.02 누군가의 삶 속에 오래, 자연스럽게 함께할 수 있는 세라믹을 연구하는 소일베이커와, 일상에서 쉽게 버려지는 신문지를 재가공해 작업하는 이우재 작가의 협업 전시 &lt;FADE IN&gt;을 선보입니다.이번 전시는 사물, 공간, 그리고 인간이 뒤얽혀 만들어내는 하나의 연극입니다. 이우재는 무언가를 올려놓기 위한 부차적 사물로 인식되던 선반을 공간의 분위기를 형성하는 주체적 무대로 재해석합니다. 전시 장소이자 약 100년의 시간을 품은 근대문화유산인 소일베이커 정동은 극장이 되고, 그 건축 요소는 이우재 작품의 색과 구조로 스며듭니다. 소일베이커의 테이블웨어는 배우로서 무대에 올라 장면을 연출하고 이야기를 이어갑니다.&lt;FADE IN&gt;은 우리 곁의 친밀한 대상들을 연극적 요소로 https://woojai.com/Invitation Invitation &lt;Invitation&gt;, 2025newspaper &amp; mixed media.(1500x1500x3000mm) 이 작품은 현대 도시의 빌딩을 연상시키는 기둥 구조 속에 한옥의 철학을 끌어들이려는 시도다.외형은 차가운 도시의 수직적 구조를 따르지만, 그 사이에 생긴 틈은 관객의 시선을 내부로 유도하며, 공간을 단절하기보다는 관계를 이어주는 장치로 작동한다.한옥에서 기둥은 단순히 하중을 지탱하는 구조물이 아니라, 자연과 사람이 만나는 공간을 정의하고, 내부와 외부 사이의 경계를 유연하게 조율하는 매개체다. 이 작품의 기둥 또한 그러한 철학을 품고 있으며, 틈을 통해 관객을 초대한다.기둥 내부에 자리한 단청색 구조는 전통 한옥의 단청처럼 자연의 색과 기운을 실내로 들여오려는 상징이다. 외부 구조에는 또한 한옥에 자주 사용되는 금강비 형태의 블럭을 적용하여, 전통의 조형 언어를 현대 도시 구조 속에 조용히 스며들게 했다.도시의 차가운 구조 속에서 전통의 사고방식이 어떻게 다시 숨 쉴 수 있는지를 묻는 이 작업은, 비움과 채움, 경계와 연결, 환대와 머무름 사이의 균형을 통해 Dimensions variable. &lt;Cityscape&gt;, 2025newspaper, styrofoam &amp; plywood. 800x1500x340mm 〈아파트 산 (APT Mountains)〉은 한국 도시 풍경의 핵심이자 상징처럼 여겨지는 아파트를 주제로 한 작업이다.반복되고 밀집된 아파트의 형상은 종종 획일적이고 부정적으로 인식되지만, 나는 그 구조 속에서 오히려 한국적인 조형성과 리듬감을 발견하였다.수평과 수직의 빽빽한 격자, 무심한 듯 단순한 외형, 그리고 그 사이로 비치는 산의 윤곽은 한국 도시에만 존재하는 특유의 시각적 언어이자, 무심한 아름다움이다.도시를 구성하는 이 ‘산’들은 무질서한 듯 정돈되어 있고, 빼곡하지만 묘하게 여백이 있다.〈아파트 산〉은 이 낯익은 풍경을 이방인의 시선으로 다시 바라보며, 우리가 쉽게 지나쳐온 도시의 장면들을 새롭게 조명하고자 한다.-&lt;APT Mountains&gt; is a work that takes as its subject the apartment buildings, regarded as both the core and the symbol of Korea’s urban landscape.The repetitive and densely clustered forms of apartments are often perceived as monotonous and negative. To them, these structures represent the competitive, hectic, and unstructured rush for growth.To me, however, they are what define Korea. The mountains of buildings form a cityscape unique to the country, reflecting its history, economy, and culture.With this body of work, the aim was to explore the spaces these buildings create — the resonances they form in the voids between them and the borders they draw against the sky. It seeks to generate appreciation for this tetris of forms, crammed together to create rhythm and texture. It was not because we could not see it-it had always existed-but it was simply unrecognised. Once the colour was acknowledged and became a symbol of many things, its presence began to accentuate what was once under-appreciated, raising it to a standard and beyond. Through the simple forms and the use of discarded newspapers, this series of works draws attention to the importance of close observation-of both colour, material and all of the under-appreciated. Sense of Belonging. During my childhood, I strongly clung to the concept of my nationality. Looking and thinking differently from the rest, I created my sense of belonging by being a proud Korean. By doing so, their mocking and disrespect towards me was somewhat bearable because out there was a country called Korea with people who looked and thought like me, ready to accept me. Legally becoming an adult and being thrown into society, I had the opportunity to meet the ‘real’ Koreans. I was ready to jump right in and be a part of them, form our circle, free from the differences that bothered me. My hopes were short-lived as no matter how much I tried, I was not the ‘real’ Korean who had experienced their troubles and cultures, making mistakes that stirred up their hierarchical system. I was yet again lost in finding my place of belonging. Categorisation. This seemed to be a problem for some. Humans cannot withstand randomness or the undefined. They are creatures of logic, always searching to find rules and answers to things that don’t make sense so that they do make sense. In such an attempt, they have created religion, science, ideas, and politics. You must be either one or the other. You must fit into a category. To Westerners’ eyes, I had to fit into the category of the polite, zen Asian. My work had to somehow tell the faults of the suppressed, competitive society of Asia to make them feel like their way of life is superior. Or it had to be about Buddhist-like meditative inner peace from their oriental fantasies. I had to be polite, bowing my head, filling my sentences with ‘thank you’s and ‘sorry’s. If I didn’t, I left them disappointed. To Easterners, my practice had to make sense. It had to be easy to understand by clearly identifying myself with a position. Am I a designer, a craftsman, or an artist? How can my ‘designed’ objects not be functional? How can my ‘art’ pieces be commercial? On Liminal Space I am what I am. I am a creature of liminal space, the outcome of uncertain transitions. Until now, my journey was to belong to a defined entity. To a country, to a culture, to a religion, and to a title. Unfortunately, never fully satisfying any one. Fortunately, this is where my creativity can blossom. Why be just one when I can be all? I now embrace the liminal space and call it my home. This is where I belong—my country, my culture, my religion, and my title. To be in a liminal space means to be on the precipice of something new but not quite there yet. The point of transition, clash, and evolution is where I find myself and where I will always place myself. Comfort and stability are just concepts that can only exist when I am truly who I am. For that, I continue my existence in liminal space.
